Non-food rPET: the practical first step

Most recycled PET entering Europe today does not go into bottles. Sheet extrusion, thermoforming, fibre and strapping absorb large volumes and are not governed by the food-contact recycling rules — which makes them the route where a new supply relationship can start while a food-contact stream is arranged.

How these grades are specified

Intrinsic viscosity (IV) — the property your downstream process is set up for; we quote against your target rather than publishing one number for all applications.
PVC and other contaminant content — the single most common cause of line stoppages in high-speed thermoforming and fibre extrusion, so it is stated on the lot certificate.
Moisture — matters for extrusion and drying capacity.
Colour stream — clear, light blue, mixed; colour-sorted clear carries the highest value and we quote streams separately.
Form and bulk density — flake, pellet or regrind, with packing to suit your intake system.

Why colour sorting is a commercial decision, not a technical detail

A blended stream is cheaper per tonne but limits what the buyer can make from it and often forces a downgrade in application. Sorting clear, light blue and mixed colour separately lets a sheet producer hold a bright specification and lets a fibre producer buy a lower grade at a lower price. We quote the streams separately and let you choose how much colour tolerance you want to pay for.

Documentation, even without food contact

Non-food grades still need paperwork: the post-consumer origin of the feedstock, the grade and lot certificate of analysis, and the weight of recycled material per shipment — because a converter making packaging from it may be asked for that data under Article 7 of the PPWR. We issue it per shipment rather than on request.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between flake and pellet for us?

Flake requires your own drying and extrusion capability and is usually cheaper; pellet is the finished grade for preform or sheet lines that want a defined IV and moisture level. Converters with existing extrusion use flake; buyers without it prefer pellet.

Can we use the same rPET for both trays and bottles?

Not usually at the same specification. Bottle-to-bottle material has tighter IV and contaminant limits and, for food contact, a register requirement. Trays and fibre accept wider tolerances, which is where a first order usually starts.

How do you control PVC contamination?

By feedstock selection and sorting at the washing stage, with the measured content stated on the lot certificate. For high-speed lines we discuss the limit your process needs up front, because a limit that is not agreed at quotation is a claim that cannot be verified later.

Do you supply packaging made from rPET as well?

Yes — trays, sheet-based formats and some containers can be produced from the same material stream, which means one supplier and one set of material documentation for both the material and the packaging.
