Selling packaging into Germany: VerpackG and LUCID

Germany adds a national layer on top of the EU rules: whoever first places packaging on the German market must be registered in the LUCID packaging register and participate in a dual system for collection and recycling. As your supplier, we give you the material and weight data that registration and volume reporting require.

Who has the obligation

The obligation sits with the party that first places the packaging on the German market for the first time in commercial terms — typically the importer, distributor or the brand that puts the packaged product on the German market. A supplier outside Germany is not the registered party.

The practical consequence for you: registration in the LUCID packaging register (Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister) and a licence with a dual system both need data that only the packaging supplier can give — material type, weight per unit, and the number of units you place on the market.

What we supply

• Material type by component (for example: carton board, PE film, PET bottle, aluminium foil) in the categories the German register uses.
• Weight per unit, per component, and the resulting annual tonnage for your volumes.
• Confirmation of whether components are system-participation relevant and whether they are separably sortable.
• Updated figures when a specification changes, so your volume report does not drift from what you actually shipped.

A workflow that avoids year-end panic

• You tell us the item, the annual quantity and the German market as destination.
• We return the quotation with a component breakdown table — material, weight, sortability.
• You register or update your volumes in LUCID and with your dual system.
• When the specification changes, we reissue the table with the new weights.

Note on other markets

The Netherlands, Italy and other member states operate their own registers and labelling rules, and they do not all follow the German model. We flag the market-specific items in the quotation, and we do not publish rules for a market until we have confirmed them against the source.
