Food contact packaging: the paperwork, not just the film

Any packaging that touches food has to be provably suitable, and the proof is a document set — not a supplier's assurance. We build the file per material and per intended use, because the migration limits depend on the food, the temperature and the contact time.

The framework we work to

EU 1935/2004 — the framework regulation: materials must not transfer constituents in quantities that endanger health or change the composition or taste of the food.
EU 10/2011 — plastics in food contact: the positive list of authorised substances, specific migration limits and overall migration limits.
Paper and board — regulated at national level in several member states plus the Council of Europe resolution; we state which national rules the mill declaration covers.
GMP Regulation (EC) 2022/1616 and 2023/2006 — good manufacturing practice for materials intended for food contact.

Documents supplied per order

Declaration of Conformity naming the material, the food types it may contact, and the temperature and duration limits.
Migration test reports from accredited laboratories (overall and specific migration), where testing is required for the food type.
Material composition sheet — every layer, adhesive, coating and ink, with food-contact status noted.
Written confirmation of the intended use conditions, and a clear statement of the conditions the material is not approved for.

Why the conditions matter more than the material name

"Food grade" is not a property of a film or a board — it is a property of the film or board under specified conditions. A laminate approved for dry biscuits at ambient temperature is not automatically approved for fatty food at 90 °C. So we ask three questions with every food-contact enquiry: what is the food, at what temperature is it filled and stored, and for how long does it stay in contact. The material and the test requirements follow from those answers.

What we will not do

We do not issue a Declaration of Conformity for a structure the producing mill has not covered, and we do not label packaging "food grade" because a similar product from another supplier is. When a request needs testing that has not been done, we say so and quote the test.

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide a Declaration of Conformity for food packaging?

Yes, for materials and structures whose producer holds the supporting declarations and test data. The DoC names the food types and the conditions of use covered — and states what is not covered.

Which test reports do you supply?

Overall and specific migration reports from accredited laboratories, selected according to the food type, contact temperature and duration for your application.

The same packaging is sold with several different foods — can one document cover all of them?

It can cover the range it has been demonstrated for. Contact conditions frequently differ between products (temperature, fat content, time), so we build the DoC on the range covered by the test data, and flag any product that falls outside it.

Can you supply the documents before we place the order?

Yes — we send the documentation for the proposed structure at quotation stage, so your compliance team can review it before you commit.
